The Irish President, Mary McAleese, receives Dr.John McCavitt at Aras an Uachtaráin to learn about the career of Major General Ross and the light it sheds on the numerous Irishmen who served both with him and against him during the Napoleonic Wars as well as in the War of 1812 when Ross captured Washington and was later shot dead near Baltimore - allegedly by a United Irishman.

Ulster Scots campaigner, Lord Laird, hosts Dr John McCavitt, at the House of Lords to mark the launch of The Man Who Captured Washington website. A distinguished gathering learned of the large numbers of Irishmen who fought with and against Major General Ross during the Peninsular War as well as in the War of 1812 - focusing in particular on the Scots Irish who opposed the British in America.

The Ross Monument was officially opened by Newry and Mourne District Council in January 2009

Restoration

Restoration

The restoration of the Ross Monument began on the 3rd of March 2008. The 25 week long project brought the monument back to its prior glory in time for the bicentenary.
