The Restored Ross Monument

   An exercise in transatlantic co-operation, this website has materialised as a result of collaboration between the Rostrevor based historian Dr John McCavitt in association with Newry and Mourne District Council working in conjunction with Christopher T. George, from Baltimore, author of Terror on the Chesapeake: The War of 1812 on the Bay and co-editor of the Journal of the War of 1812. Acknowledgement is also due to the generous co-operation of Dr Richard Baker, Chief Historian to the US Senate who facilitated among other things the provision of contemporary images by Heather Moore, Photographic Historian to the US Senate. Bill Allman, Curator of the White House, Bill Allen, Architectural Historian to the Capitol, Edward Furgol, Curator of the National Museum of the United States Navy, Washington Navy Yard, Jim Gardner, Associate Director of Curatorial Affairs, Smithsonian Institute (National Museum of American History) and Scott Sheads, Historian/Historic Weapons Officer at Fort McHenry National Monument, Baltimore, all generously afforded private tours of their institutions to John McCavitt during a research trip to Washington and Baltimore during the summer of 2009. The Ross Monument was officially opened by Newry and Mourne District Council in January 2009

Restoration

Restoration

The restoration of the Ross Monument began on the 3rd of March 2008. The 25 week long project brought the monument back to its prior glory in time for the bicentenary.
